Food for thought: Ireland have beaten the Box in three of the last four tests between these teams. I would suggest that the Boks were not "The best" in three of the last four games, but hey carry on being delusional.

The first test between these two sides saw some very bad decisions by the officials going against Ireland. I can’t say that this then handed the game to SA because nobody knows and never will know. But I’d like to have seen what the outcome would have been if Luke Pearce and in particular, Ben Whitehouse, had not delivered such an incompetence performance. Both Doris and Lowe had perfectly good tries disallowed and Snyman, coming from an offside position, showed no professional duty of care to Casey. Lowe was also clearly in touch when he had contact with the pill. How that wasn’t seen is beyond me and of course that led to a SA try. The penalty try was a farce. It was a penalty but please show me where a certain try was prevented. Shocking decision.

Ireland is by far the better team consistently.

The fact that there is a conversation (ridiculous as it may be) and that Ireland are part of it is bizarre to us older fans. For the first twenty years I watched rugby we managed 1 win against France, 2 against Australia and 0 against South Africa and NZ. And a lot of those matches were extremely one-sided. Win or lose, these are great days, and I am loving every minute of it.

But...I don't think NZ could match the physicality Ireland did and brought in the recent 2 tests.

I'm Irish and I would say that 50%-60% of the time SA will physically dominate Ireland and win. But we are a better attacking team and can turn physical teams like SA around depending upon the luck of that physical outcome and a refs breakdown interpretation. NZ are in transition, but they are abetter attacking team than we are. If NZ can sort out their line out and improve their breakdown physicality (which I think they can) they can beat SA. Im not sure of a 1, 2 commentary without NZ is a valid one!

I've said this since the 2019. SA are the best team in the world. There is a tournament to decide that and they're back to back champions. Ireland being 1 or 2 in the rankings shows we are very consistent and capable of competing with the best.

No-one seems to mention that 9 of the 10 point come back was when Irish captain was in sin bin.. Hat off to both teams. Great game

South Africa won the world cup, won 3 knock out games by a point. So is the sttategy not that the team needs more string to their bow, more attacking threat, they have great individuals. Start expansive, and refine it over time to find the balance, also hedges against the rule changes

Agree that Ireland played great rugby. You guys said that the Boks should stick to the physical game, yet Rassie is trying to expand on that. The fact that Ireland matched and overcame the Boks physicality shows that the Boks won’t have a way to win if they do not try and at least practice the expansiveness, for when the upfront and physical game plan doesn’t work. South Africa didn’t need to rely on the physical game plan in the first test because of the expansiveness.

I think something missing from this podcast is that The Irish have had so many games together this calendar year whereas for us we still fresh together as a team and for me that plays as a hugggeee advantage !!!!! Huge my man

Just like to comment on the 'croc roll' as apparently Marx has a leg break, i really don't think there was intent there, Etzebeth was holding McCarthy preventing him from clearing out, this changed the whole dynamic of the tackle, Marx is so strong, which meant Ryan was forced to come in from about 10 yards away and worsened the situation. Another point, not wishing to get into ifs and buts, but SA lucky with a couple of clear wrong penalty calls enabling them to get their nose in front, as I said many missed calls throughout, but felt that was a crucial point in the game.

Fair shout lads with the 'respect' comments and loved the opening song, just brilliant, one thing which applies to all teams, Energy and Intent, SA had it for the first test, angered by the WC loss, Ireland had it in spades for the second week, very difficult to bottle that and bring it out a week later. I think the catalyst for Irelands intent was the tackle by Snyman on Casey, while not illegal, definately unnecessary given the size difference, I think Farrell motivatedthe team around that event.

i agree about the backs to the wall thesis, and i think its because so much of the bok advantage comes from physicality. physicality requires focus and that extra 1% effort. knockout matches the boys find that extra bit to make their tackles or disrupt a ruck. the ABs and ireland on the other hand can rely on their system to just keep girinding, through the hands, until a space opens and a player of talent can move 30m up the pitch

I disagree with Zels on how we need to stick to the SA brand of rugby. We dont have to give up on that type of play by having the option of a more expansive game there on offer. Handre is a dead end to the backline and if we had a better playmaker there, then Willie would not have been such a big loss. We need someone that has a better eye and playmaking skills. Sascha? Manie? Sanele? I think we need to move from Handre IMO

If we want to play a more attacking style, as opposed to attacking from a defensive position and putting the opposition under pressure, then we need players like Grant, Mannie, and Hacjivah in the squad. I love Faf and Polly, but they are best utilized with a game plan that is dictated by the boot. If we are to be more consistent, we need the right type of players for the right game plan; otherwise, we'll remain a tournament team that performs best under pressure and as the underdog.

When you cherry-pick data it looks bad 1 out of 4 over a 7 year period. could also be 1-1 since being crowned world champs. Out of the 5 series we've played against Ireland, boks won 4 with 1 draw.

When you win the RWC playing against a 14-man side the onus is on you to back it up. Two games into the season and the boks have failed at home. Not good. Not good at all.

The Boks were lethargic, they showed no innovation. They reverted backing to a bashing style, which Ireland (and most other teams) countered. It was really not exciting to watch. But let’s hope they get into a winning style. There are some fundamental about a winning style & that is moving the ball rapidly into space with players supporting close on another’s shoulder.

Total respect to you guys for being so objectively fair to Ireland.The Boks are the best in the world, biggest most ruthless squad, winning a world cup from a nightmare section of the draw which our Irish squad couldn't cope with after our win against the Boks, it took too much out of our squad by the time we played a rested All Blacks. The Boks v the All Blacks will be VERY interesting for a neutral viewer in late august-september.

Yeah couldn’t agree more, I’m no expert but I have been watching this wonderful sport for many many years, and the second the Boks became “favorites” I predicted an Ireland comeback in the 2nd test. I’ve seen it over and over. That said, the Irish were incredible and immensely physical. Unbelievable performance from the Irish, one can only tip your cap and pay them the respect they deserve. Well done Ireland!

Who wouldn't;t love to see a 3rd test? But it's important that teams like Portugal get more exposure and experience playing big teams. We can't have it all our own way.
